Artist’s Statement
I am a painter who lives and works in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.
I draw inspiration from the world around me. My landscape paintings capture everyday scenes from my surroundings as a way of celebrating our lived experience.
Each painting explores the way light creates colour, moments that are often glimpsed whilst moving through the landscape either on foot or by bike. Each is titled with the time, day and month in an effort to fix its existence and indeed my existence in time and space. I also keep a painting diary, excerpts are included in the painting descriptions.
I had a desire to be an artist from a young age but graduated from Art College in the early 1990’s disillusioned and unemployable. At the time, young and foolish, I remember declaring that I never had to paint another painting unless I wanted to!
This prophetic statement led to a hiatus of over 30 years.
I enjoyed my time in art college but despised the way creativity became a pretentious, competitive, commercial and ultimately joyless activity.
Biography
During the intervening years Geraint has channelled his creativity in other directions as well as nurturing his family and a career in healthcare. He is a keen cyclist who rides out and about with his local club at least three times a week.
He founded and ran an independent small press, Blackheath Books, between 2005 and 2016, publishing some of the best British Counter Culture writers around at the time. All the books were made by hand using last century printing techniques and vintage equipment.
He is also a musician who has played in bands, collaborating with friends to explore the limits of creative expression.
Recently he has rekindled his love of painting.
‘Deep down I have always considered myself a painter but had to confront myself with the absurdity of being a painter who didn’t paint’
‘I realised if I wanted to be a painter I had to paint’
His paintings are not overly contrived, composed or staged. They are moments in time that aim to create connections. His work is built around the fundamentals of authenticity, self-expression and autonomy.
‘I paint what I paint because I want to paint’
